About this book
The Scapegoat by Hall Caine lists a preface and chapters I to XXVIII in its contents. The preface describes a land within sight of an English port where the ways of life are the same to-day as they were a thousand years ago. The preface calls that land one wherein justice is bought and sold, wherein it is a terror to be rich and a danger to be poor.
A character named Israel has one hope on his heart, that Ruth might soon bear a child. A passage about more than a hundred and twenty families says they thought they were entitled to elect a Synhedrin and appointed three-and-twenty judges. A character named Ali waited with impatience for the day that was to see the end of his enterprise.
