About this book

An inheritance at Ballamona exposes the unequal fortunes of the Mylrea brothers on the Isle of Man. Thorkell manages the family estate with calculation and rising demands on its tenants, while Gilcrist turns toward study and religious thought. After their father's death, Gilcrist leaves for Cambridge, and Thorkell arranges a marriage through the island's archdeacon. Hall Caine opens this novel with household grief, disputed interests and the pressure of local authority.

The island landscape gives these conflicts a physical presence: peat fires, marshes, churchyards and the cold sea surround the family. In a later passage, Dan stands in a deep shaft as wind and rain intensify his fear. His thoughts turn to forgiveness, his father the Bishop and the possibility of escape. Readers interested in family conflict and religious conscience will find a story that joins close observation of place to urgent struggles over guilt and responsibility.

About the author

Hall Caine

Hall Caine built an international readership through novels, drama, biography, and public lectures rooted in the moral and social life of the Isle of Man. The Manxman places a difficult triangle of loyalty, ambition, and love within Manx custom, while The Little Manx Nation gathers lectures on the island's rulers, church, and people.
