Hamid Ismailov is an Uzbek novelist and journalist whose fiction often brings Central Asian histories into formally inventive narratives. The Dead Lake follows a railway traveler across Kazakhstan who meets Yerzhan, a gifted musician whose body stopped developing after contact with a forbidden lake near the Semipalatinsk testing zone. Yerzhan's account unfolds as a story within a story, combining steppe folklore, memory, music, and the environmental legacy of Soviet atomic experiments. Peirene Press published Andrew Bromfield's English translation in 2014; the Russian original, Wunderkind Erjan, had appeared earlier. The novella's compact structure gives a public disaster an intimate scale, tracing how contaminated land reshapes one person's family life and future. Ismailov balances realistic historical detail with dream, tale, and recurring image instead of using the setting merely as scenery. The Dead Lake was later associated with international literary-prize attention, strengthening its place among English translations that introduced Ismailov's Central Asian fiction to a wider readership.
