Hanna Alkaf
1985
Hanna Alkaf writes middle-grade and teen fiction rooted in Malaysian settings, history, and folklore. A journalism graduate, she produced magazine features, corporate reports, and other nonfiction before publishing novels. Her middle-grade debut with HarperCollins, The Girl and the Ghost, follows Suraya and an inherited spirit called Pink, drawing its central friendship from a Malaysian folk tale. The novel reached the final round of the 2020 Kirkus Prize. Her other books include The Weight of Our Sky, Queen of the Tiles, and Hamra and the Jungle of Memories. Together, they show how Alkaf moves between age ranges and genres while returning to Malaysian experiences and traditions.
