Hannah Kohler

Hannah Kohler builds historical novels around private loyalties tested by war and political change. The Outside Lands begins with siblings Jeannie and Kip after their mother's death leaves their California family unmoored. Jeannie moves toward marriage and a world of wealth and influence, while Kip's petty trouble gives way to enlistment in the Marines. Their paths converge with the Vietnam War and the American antiwar movement, forcing both to reckon with betrayal, responsibility, and the lasting cost of choices made under pressure. Picador published the British edition in 2016 and the American edition in 2017. Macmillan identifies the book as Kohler's debut and classifies it as literary fiction. Rather than treating the 1960s as distant scenery, Kohler makes public history intimate: changes in politics, military service, and family expectations reach the characters through grief, ambition, and the uncertain effort to protect one another.
