Harold Avery

Harold Avery built a prolific career in juvenile adventure, and his many books helped define the school story at the start of the twentieth century. Gunpowder Treason and Plot, and Other Stories for Boys brings together seven tales by Avery, Frederick Whishaw, and R. B. Townshend. Thomas Nelson and Sons issued the collection in 1901 with fourteen illustrations. Its contents move among school rivalry, friendship, maritime adventure, historical settings, loyalty, and reconciliation, giving the collaborators room to vary setting while retaining an emphasis on conduct under pressure. Avery, born in 1867, wrote more than sixty books and became especially associated with stories of boys navigating school rules, competition, and responsibility. The collection's shared byline matters because it is an anthology rather than a single-author novel. Gunpowder Treason and Plot, and Other Stories for Boys therefore offers a compact view of several writers working within the same period's juvenile adventure tradition, with Avery prominent but not alone.
