About this book

Rival bands at Hobworth's School turn a May afternoon into a chase through Patchley Wood. Recalling school life around 1830, the narrator describes his friendship with Miles Coverthorne and the rough power held by older boys. When Miles twists his ankle, the pair must find cover before Ben Liddle and his followers catch them. Harold Avery begins this historical adventure with games, territorial disputes and a test of loyalty.

The danger later reaches the coast near Rockymouth, where the narrator and George Woodley travel under guard with escaping convicts. A coach, a possible hiding place and the need to avoid discovery give the scene its tension. Written for younger readers, Highway Pirates brings schoolboy friendship into a wider story involving smugglers and inheritance. Its first-person account offers a view of school rivalries alongside the risks of a coastal adventure.
