Harrison Weir combined work as a British artist, illustrator, writer, and influential organiser of interest in domestic animals. Favourite Fables brings together prose and verse tales with twenty-four illustrations engraved by John Greenaway, Butterworth and Heath, reflecting Weir's gift for close observation of animal form and character. Griffith and Farran published the volume in London in 1870. Weir illustrated a wide range of natural-history and children's books, while his own publications addressed birds, poultry, and cats. He also helped organise the first modern cat show at London's Crystal Palace in 1871 and later served as the first president of the National Cat Club.
