About this book
Harrison Weir treats the household cat as an animal worth patient observation, kind handling and exact description. Drawing on more than fifty years of watching animals, he argues that attentive care can shape a cat's habits and its relationship with people. His prefaces also show a collector's curiosity: Egyptian cat mummies and old beliefs about witches enter his discussion of the animal's place in human life.
The practical sections move from feeding, brushing and transport to the standards used at cat shows. Weir specifies the space and ventilation an exhibition basket should provide, then assigns points to such features as head shape, eyes, fur, colour, tail and condition. His description of tortoiseshell markings makes clear how closely he studies small differences. This 1892 edition offers a view of nineteenth-century cat care and judging, with personal observation beside the customs and stories people attached to their pets.
