Henry Abbey was an American poet, journalist, and banker whose narrative verse often turned personal conflict into a compact moral story. Stories in Verse appeared through A. D. F. Randolph in 1869 and gathers poems including Blanche, Karagwe, an African, Grace Bernard, and Veera. The volume followed May Dreams and Ralph and Other Poems, then preceded Ballads of Good Deeds and later collected editions of Abbey's poetry. Born in Rondout, New York, he worked briefly in journalism before entering banking, eventually serving as president of a Kingston bank while continuing to publish. He also participated in New York literary and professional associations. His poems frequently use anecdote, dramatic reversal, and historical or classical settings, an approach visible throughout Stories in Verse. Abbey's long publishing career joined local civic life with steady literary production, and his widely anthologized poem What Do We Plant? carried his plainspoken moral verse beyond the original collections.
