Henry Blanc was a physician and staff assistant surgeon in the Bombay Army who drew his writing from diplomatic service and imprisonment in Ethiopia. The Story of the Captives recounts events surrounding Hormuzd Rassam's mission to Abyssinia and the Europeans held under Emperor Tewodros II, called Theodore in many English records. Blanc wrote from direct participation, and a surviving edition closes with a dated statement from Magdala in August 1867. He later produced the fuller A Narrative of Captivity in Abyssinia, published by Smith, Elder in 1868, combining personal experience with descriptions of the emperor, country, and people. His medical and military role placed him inside the expedition's practical hardships as well as its political tensions. The Story of the Captives is therefore best understood as an immediate historical narrative rather than a detached later survey. Its terminology reflects a nineteenth-century British viewpoint, which modern readers can distinguish from the eyewitness detail that gives the work documentary value.
