Henry Koster gained unusual firsthand knowledge of plantation society during his long residence as an English traveller and writer in northeastern Brazil. Born in Lisbon to a British merchant family, he arrived in Pernambuco in 1809 and later managed sugar estates while travelling widely through the region. His best-known book, Travels in Brazil, appeared in 1816 and described landscapes, agriculture, local customs, and the unequal social order he observed. On the Amelioration of Slavery belongs to the same period but takes a more concentrated argumentative form. The essay considers how the condition of enslaved people might be improved and places moral objections beside economic and administrative proposals. Koster's position remained entangled with the plantation system in which he participated, a tension that makes the pamphlet historically revealing rather than simple advocacy. Together, his travel narrative and this shorter work document an English-speaking resident's close, conflicted view of early nineteenth-century Brazil.
