Henry James Sumner Maine influenced legal anthropology and sociology through comparative jurisprudence, legal history, and colonial administration. Lectures on the Early History of Institutions dates from 1875 and develops arguments about kinship, tribal organization, property, legal remedies, sovereignty, and the movement of societies from inherited status toward contractual association. The volume grew from lectures and extended ideas first made famous in Ancient Law. Maine taught jurisprudence at Oxford and Cambridge, served on the Council of the Governor-General of India, and later became master of Trinity Hall, Cambridge. His other major books include Village Communities, Dissertations on Early Law and Custom, Popular Government, and International Law. Although later scholarship has challenged many of his broad evolutionary models, his comparative method shaped generations of debate about legal development. Lectures on the Early History of Institutions remains central to understanding both Maine’s influence and the assumptions of nineteenth-century comparative jurisprudence.
