Henry Fairfield Osborn shaped vertebrate paleontology as a museum administrator, Columbia professor, and researcher at the American Museum of Natural History. A Review Of The Cretaceous Mammalia studies early mammals, while Manus, Sacrum, and Caudals of Sauropoda concerns dinosaur anatomy. From the Greeks to Darwin follows the history of evolutionary thought, and The American Museum Of Natural History reflects his institutional leadership. A Naturalist in the Bahamas has a different relationship to Osborn: it is a memorial volume built from the Bahamian papers of naturalist John I. Northrop. Osborn served as editor and wrote its biographical introduction rather than authoring Northrop’s field observations. He organized the museum’s vertebrate paleontology department during 1891 before eventually leading the institution as president. Osborn published extensively and named influential dinosaur genera, but he also promoted eugenics, now rejected as harmful pseudoscience.
