James Freeman Clarke was a Unitarian minister, editor, reformer, and author closely connected with nineteenth-century Boston intellectual life. His religious works include Theodore Parker, and His Theology: A Discourse Delivered in the Music Hall, Boston; The Well-Instructed Scribe; Or, Reform and Conservatism; The Lord’s Prayer: Being the Last Eight Discourses; The Fourth Gospel; and The Church, As It Was, As It Is, As It Ought To Be. His interests extended beyond sermons. On Giving Names to Towns and Streets addressed civic memory, while The Battle of Syracuse joined his essay with one by Francis Ellingwood Abbot. Clarke supplied the introduction to Katherine B. Caine’s Light On The Hidden Way. He also translated French, German, and Italian poems with his daughter Lilian for Exotics: Attempts To Domesticate Them. Clarke founded Boston’s Church of the Disciples and later taught religion at Harvard.
