Hervey Keyes wrote nineteenth-century adventure fiction that places frontier conflict, family peril, and contested loyalties inside a fast-moving story. The Forest King first appeared with the fuller subtitle or, The Wild Hunter of the Adaca and describes itself as a tale of the seventeenth century. Its action follows Mayall, his family, and neighboring Mohawk characters through encounters in the forests of colonial New York. The surviving 1878 text combines pursuit, captivity, rescue, and uneasy relations between settlers and Indigenous communities. Keyes gives the landscape an active role: woods, streams, caves, and isolated homes determine how characters travel, hide, and defend one another. The Forest King is therefore best approached as a period frontier romance whose historical assumptions belong to its own era. Modern readers can recognize both the energy of its wilderness plot and the dated cultural framing through which that plot was originally presented.
