Horace Annesley Vachell was an English novelist, playwright, short-story writer, essayist, and memoirist whose long career moved between Britain and California. Born in 1861, he spent years ranching in the American West before returning to England, experiences that informed books such as Bunch Grass and Life and Sport on the Pacific Slope. Jelf’s: A Comedy in Four Acts appeared in 1912 and helped establish a productive period in the theatre. Searchlights followed in 1915 as a play in three acts, near Quinneys’ and The Case of Lady Camber in his stage bibliography. Contemporary reports treated these productions as evidence that Vachell had shifted considerable attention from novels to drama.
