About this book

The Hill: A Romance of Friendship, by Horace Annesley Vachell, is dedicated to George W. E. Russell, who the dedication says was the first to suggest that the writer should write a book about contemporary life at Harrow. Scaife says that, between themselves, the Manor has gone to pot ever since Dirty Dick took hold of it. John works his way along the upper passage and down the second flight of stairs to the first landing, where oak panels covered with names and dates hang close to the house notice-board.

The Caterpillar says one draws the line at playing for stakes one can't afford to lose, and that Lovell and the Demon have made it too hot. Scaife disappears, leaving John and Desmond together, and Desmond says he is playing bridge in Lovell's room. John learns from his mother that his uncle had borne all the charges of his education, and when he thanks him the uncle says warmly that he has more than repaid him.
