Author: Hudson Stuck
Hudson Stuck (1863-1920) was born in London and educated in England before emigrating to the United States, where he studied at Sewanee, was ordained an Episcopal priest, and served in Texas. In 1904 he went north as Archdeacon of the Yukon, a post he held until his death at Fort Yukon, traveling almost constantly among the mission stations of interior Alaska. With Harry Karstens he co-led the 1913 expedition that made the first complete ascent of Denali, recounted in his book The Ascent of Denali (1914). His writing pairs plainspoken trail narrative with sustained advocacy for Alaska Native communities.
