Matthew Henson

Matthew Henson (1866-1955) was an African American explorer who joined Robert Peary on Arctic expeditions for more than two decades. Skilled with dog sledges and fluent in Inuit, he was a central member of the 1909 party that claimed the North Pole, though wide recognition came only near the end of his life.
