Humphry Davy joined chemistry, public lecturing, invention, and scientific writing, and his later books brought natural observation into philosophical reflection. John Murray anonymously issued Salmonia Or Days of Fly Fishing in 1828, framing it as conversations about angling, fish behavior, landscape, and natural history. Consolations in Travel or the Last Days of a Philosopher was published posthumously by Murray in 1830 and edited by Davy’s brother John. Its six dialogues move from Roman ruins and visions of human progress to immortality, chemistry, and time. Davy was a pioneering electrochemist and celebrated lecturer, and Salmonia developed his scientific outlook through a literary form. These two works reveal the reflective side of a scientist known for experimental research and the miners’ safety lamp. One turns field observation into conversational natural history; the other uses imagined travel and dialogue to test scientific, spiritual, and philosophical questions near the end of his life.
