Researches Chemical and Philosophical; Chiefly concerning nitrous oxide

Researches, Chemical and Philosophical, chiefly concerning nitrous oxide, or dephlogisticated nitrous air, and its respiration, is by Humphry Davy, superintendent of the Medical Pneumatic Institution. Research I in the contents list is into the analysis of Nitric Acid and Nitrous Gas, and the production of Nitrous Oxide. Division I there covers experiments and observations on the composition of Nitric Acid, and on its combinations with Water and Nitrous Gas.

The writer reports that the volume of gas diminished with great rapidity, and was much surprised by finding that not quite 2 cubic inches remained, which consisted of nitrous oxide, mingled with the nitrogene that existed before the experiment. Miss E., a young lady who had been subject to hysteric fits, breathed three quarts of nitrous oxide mingled with much common air and felt no effects but a slight tendency to fainting, and breathed four quarts of pure nitrous oxide, her first inspirations being deep and her last very feeble.
