Ian Irvine brings the habits of a marine scientist to epic fantasy, grounding vast invented worlds in physical consequence and carefully tested rules. He began constructing the Three Worlds setting in the late 1970s, then spent twelve years writing the quartet that opens with A Shadow on the Glass. That novel introduces Karan and the chronicler Llian as competing peoples struggle over knowledge with the power to alter their world. The Summon Stone launches the later Gates of Good and Evil quartet, returning to Karan, Llian, and their daughter as a hidden stone awakens and threatens to open a passage for the Merdrun. Orbit published it in 2016. Irvine's doctoral and consulting work concerned marine pollution and contaminated sediments. He has explained that the same analytical outlook informs his fiction: magic carries costs, portals have environmental effects, landscapes remain geographically consistent, and even travel times, calendars, moons, and tides must agree. That discipline gives both books a material foundation beneath their large-scale adventure.
