J.A. Tyler

J.A. Tyler works as a novelist, editor, and teacher whose fiction often places family life beside surreal or mythic transformations. His work has appeared in literary journals including Denver Quarterly, and his books include The Zoo, a Going and Only and Ever This. Dzanc Books brought out Only and Ever This during 2023. Four brothers in one household are continually remade as familiar creatures from old popular stories while their parents struggle with the passage of time. Tyler developed the book over nearly a decade, drawing on classic movie monsters and on his experience of parenthood. The repeated transformations give concrete form to the fear that children change faster than a family can understand. Only and Ever This moves through cycles rather than a simple linear adventure, combining poetic compression, domestic detail, and speculative imagery.
