Author: J. Anderson Coats
J. Anderson Coats brings graduate training in history and library science to historical and speculative fiction for younger readers. The Atheneum imprint released R Is for Rebel in February 2018. The novel follows Malley, a girl captured after resisting the government that conquered her country and imprisoned her parents. Sent to a national school intended to erase language, identity, and political loyalty, she organizes resistance among other students. Coats uses an invented semi-industrial world, but the school and its program echo historical systems of colonial reeducation. That design lets the book examine cultural suppression, ideological disagreement, and the cost of rebellion without attaching Malley's country to one historical event. Coats's other novels include The Wicked and the Just, The Many Reflections of Miss Jane Deming, and The Green Children of Woolpit. R Is for Rebel extends her interest in young people navigating institutions whose official version of order conflicts with memory, community, and personal conscience.
