J. Ashley-Smith
J. Ashley-Smith, a British-Australian writer, joins emotional realism with uncanny settings in his dark speculative fiction. Meerkat Press published The Measure of Sorrow in 2023 as his first story collection, bringing together ten new and previously acclaimed pieces. The stories move through coastal limbo, a post-bushfire landscape, suburban unease, family grief, and encounters with the otherworldly, yet their focus remains on vulnerable people facing experiences they cannot readily explain. Ashley-Smith had already established his voice through The Attic Tragedy, which received a Shirley Jackson Award, and through shorter work recognized by the Ditmar, Australian Shadows, and Aurealis awards. The Measure of Sorrow was also shortlisted for the 2023 Aurealis Award for Best Collection. That combination of formal recognition and a carefully shaped debut collection places Ashley-Smith within contemporary Australian weird fiction, where atmosphere, sorrow, and close observation carry as much weight as supernatural events.
