Attila Veres
The Black Maybe is the first collection of Veres in English, and everything in it is recognisably Central European: a tourist economy built on a national wound, a religious retreat that consumes its visitors, folk practice treated as ordinary infrastructure rather than as superstition. He writes screenplays in Hungary and has a substantial readership there. A small press specialising in weird fiction brought the translation out, which is how most Hungarian horror reaches English at all.
