Charles MacKay worked as a Scottish journalist, poet, songwriter, and editor, moving between popular verse and social commentary. Songs And Poems, issued by Cochrane and M’Crone in 1834, was among his earliest collections. Its contents range from ballads and imagined folk songs to devotional, reflective, and supernatural pieces, including “The Green Bay Tree,” “The Will o’ the Wisp,” “The North Countrie,” and “The Falling Stars.” MacKay later became widely known for Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds, but poetry and song remained central to his public reputation. He wrote lyrics intended for communal performance as well as quieter poems of memory, landscape, faith, and ordinary working life. Later collections such as Voices from the Crowd and Town Lyrics developed that accessible, musical style. Songs And Poems captures an early stage of the same project, showing Charles MacKay experimenting with the forms and subjects that would make him a familiar Victorian poet and songwriter.
