Kate moore
1979
Moore was directing a play about the radium dial painters when she realised their full story had never been told properly. The Radium Girls follows the young American women who painted luminous watch faces through the 1910s and 1920s, were instructed to point their brushes with their lips, and later went to law as their jaws disintegrated. The book rests on their own letters and on court records. She is British, works in London, and has written since about a woman committed to an asylum by her husband.
