Jennifer Hillier
1974
Jennifer Hillier is a Canadian writer of Filipino descent who grew up in Toronto, and the city keeps surfacing in her books even after the eight years she spent in Seattle. Jar of Hearts (2018) starts when the remains of a schoolfriend missing for fourteen years are found near the woods of a childhood home. Georgina Shaw is a Seattle pharmaceutical executive by then, and the discovery is what breaks the case: she is arrested, tried and sentenced for helping her first boyfriend conceal what he did to Angela Wong. It took the best hardcover novel prize from the International Thriller Writers and was shortlisted for both the Anthony and the Macavity. Things We Do in the Dark (2022) opens with Paris Peralta arrested in her own bathroom after her much older comedian husband is found dead, a Seattle scandal that drags her back towards the Toronto childhood and the mother whose name she has spent years running from. Its audiobook won her another ITW award in 2023. Her thrillers appear in over twenty languages, and she lives in Oakville, Ontario.
