Jesmeen Kaur Deo

Jesmeen Kaur Deo is a Canadian writer whose debut novel, TJ Powar Has Something to Prove, was published by Viking Books for Young Readers in 2022. The story follows a Punjabi Sikh Canadian high school debater who responds to a cruel comparison involving her cousin by questioning the beauty standards she has accepted. Penguin Random House places the novel within young-reader social-issues fiction and romance, while Publishers Weekly emphasizes its attention to body image, self-worth, family, friendship, and perspectives across the Indian diaspora. Deo grew up in northern British Columbia, and the publisher presents the book's Canadian setting and debate-team framework as integral to its exploration of belonging. The result combines a school story and romantic comedy with a specific argument about appearance, cultural expectations, and learning to judge oneself by broader standards.
