Jody Gayle
Jody Gayle is a researcher and writer whose work explores the material culture, customs, and literary background of historical romance. The Official Essex Sisters Companion Guide was created with novelist Eloisa James and published by Avon Impulse in 2016. Gayle contributes essays on period subjects such as fashion, horse racing, and the London theatre, while James supplies notes, extra chapters, an alternate version of Kiss Me, Annabel, and a new story set in the Essex Sisters world. The result is neither a conventional series handbook nor a single-author novel. It combines literary commentary, historical context, and creative material to show how research and revision shaped the four Essex Sisters books. Gayle’s role is explicitly collaborative, complementing James’s account of characters and discarded story paths with details about the social world behind them. Her contribution turns background detail into a practical map of the series’ social setting. The Official Essex Sisters Companion Guide is consequently the clearest statement of Gayle’s work as a historical researcher serving both fiction and its readers.
