John A. Joyce

John A. Joyce combined the roles of American poet, writer, lecturer, and Civil War veteran, often joining recollection, argument, and imaginative history. Shakspere is a shortened form of Shakspere, Personal Recollections, first published in 1904. Rather than constructing a conventional scholarly biography, Joyce invents a witness who claims centuries of acquaintance with William Shakespeare and recounts episodes from the playwright’s life. The narrative moves through Stratford childhood, schooling, London theatre, literary success, and later reputation with a storyteller’s freedom. Joyce’s full name was John Alexander Joyce, and his unusual device deliberately blurs fantasy with cultural remembrance.
