John Hungerford Pollen
John Hungerford Pollen was an English architect, decorative artist, designer, and museum writer closely associated with the South Kensington Museum. Ancient and Modern Furniture and Woodwor is a visibly truncated form of Ancient and Modern Furniture and Woodwork, his illustrated survey of furniture and related craftsmanship. The volume arranges its subject historically, moving from Egyptian, Greek, and Roman examples through medieval, Renaissance, and later European work. Chests, cabinets, chairs, tables, and domestic fittings show changing habits alongside methods of construction. Chapman and Hall published the museum-linked edition in 1874. Numerous woodcut illustrations support Pollen’s attention to materials, ornament, use, and regional design traditions. Modern readers receive both a period survey of decorative arts and a nineteenth-century interpretation of design history. Its terminology and judgments reflect its era, but its range makes it useful for understanding how Victorian museum scholarship organized furniture as evidence of technological skill, household practice, artistic taste, and historical exchange.
