Helen Marot joined librarianship, writing, labor investigation, and union organizing in work concentrated on women, child labor, and industrial organization. American Labor Unions, published by Henry Holt in 1914, explains the structures, jurisdictional disputes, strategies, and competing philosophies of organized labor in the United States. The title page identified Marot as a member of an American Federation of Labor local, a former executive secretary of New York’s Women’s Trade Union League, and author of a labor-literature handbook. Earlier, she helped establish the Free Library of Economics and Political Science in Philadelphia and worked with reformers investigating employment conditions. In New York she organized office workers and participated in the shirtwaist makers’ strike, later serving on the editorial boards of The Masses and The Dial. American Labor Unions belongs to the period when she combined direct organizing experience with institutional analysis. Her later Creative Impulse in Industry continued her interest in how industrial systems affect autonomy, skill, collective agency, and democratic participation. Her archive documents reform networks beyond her published books.
