Joris-Karl Huysmans
Joris-Karl Huysmans was a French novelist, art critic, and civil servant whose career crossed several literary movements. His early fiction developed within Naturalism, while Against the Grain shifted toward the aesthetic and psychological concerns associated with Decadence. Là-Bas introduced the writer Durtal, a recurring character whose inward and religious development continues in En Route. Huysmans's later conversion to Catholicism reshaped both his subject matter and critical reputation. The label Sac Au Do points to an early military novella connected with the Naturalist collection Les Soirées de Médan. Across these works, he paired exact observation of rooms, objects, art, and ritual with narrators dissatisfied with ordinary social life. That combination made him important to French Decadent writing while preserving clear links to his Naturalist beginnings.
