Kelly Lytle Hernandez
1974
Bad Mexicans follows the magonistas, exiled Mexican radicals who organised the 1910 revolution from inside the United States, and the American agents who spent years hunting them along the border. Lytle Hernandez is a historian in Los Angeles who treats policing, incarceration and immigration as one subject rather than three. City of Inmates counts everybody the city has locked up since 1771 and asks who kept ending up there. Migra! is the history of the Border Patrol. She built a public database of the city's arrest records and holds a MacArthur fellowship.
