Kimberly Brock draws her fiction from Southern places, women’s history, and family inheritance. The Lost Book of Eleanor Dare, published by Harper Muse in 2022 with the subtitle A Novel, links the unresolved story of Roanoke colonist Eleanor Dare with a twentieth century mother and daughter. During the closing days of 1945, Alice Young returns with her daughter Penn to Evertell, the family property she has inherited, where a commonplace book and the contested Dare Stones complicate their understanding of the past. Brock alternates historical suggestion with imaginative family history, making the novel both Southern historical fiction and an alternate account of a famous colonial mystery. She is also the author of The River Witch and founded Tinderbox Writers Workshop, extending her work into teaching and literary community building. The Harper Muse edition connects Brock’s interest in regional memory with an intergenerational story about the ways inherited objects can alter a family’s understanding of itself.
