Lars Levi Laestadius was a Swedish Sámi pastor, botanist, and ethnographer whose field knowledge informed an early systematic study of Sámi belief. Fragments of Lappish Mythology grew from his work with the French La Recherche expedition of 1838 to 1840, which commissioned him to document the region's history and traditions. He completed the Swedish manuscript in the mid-1840s, but sections were dispersed and the work appeared much later. Aspasia Books published the English edition in 2002, edited by Juha Pentikäinen and translated by K. Börje Vähämäki. Its chapters arrange deities, sacred places, ritual practices, divination, and oral accounts into Laestadius's proposed mythological structure. The volume is therefore useful both as a record of nineteenth-century scholarship and as evidence of how a pastor, scientist, and participant in northern Sámi life interpreted traditions that require careful historical context today.
