Leopold Kompert was a Bohemian Jewish writer associated with the development of nineteenth-century ghetto fiction in German. A Ghetto Violet is the English translation of a story from Christian and Leah, rendered by A. S. Arnold and dated 1869. The narrative follows a family marked by Ascher's gambling, Gudule's endurance, and the loyalty of their children, Ephraim and Viola. After their mother's death and their father's imprisonment, the siblings must decide how responsibility, shame, and forgiveness will shape their lives. Kompert's wider fiction includes Aus dem Ghetto, Böhmische Juden, Am Pfluge, Neue Geschichten aus dem Ghetto, and Geschichten einer Gasse. He also worked as a tutor, journalist, and editor before devoting himself more fully to literary work in Vienna. A Ghetto Violet reflects his recurring attention to Jewish communal life in Bohemia, especially the tensions between inherited social limits, family obligation, rural opportunity, and the possibility of change beyond the ghetto.
