Francis Hueffer was a German-born British music critic, librettist, scholar, and translator. Correspondence of Wagner and Liszt — Volume 2 presents his English translation of letters exchanged by Richard Wagner and Franz Liszt, and Project Gutenberg identifies Hueffer specifically as the translator rather than an author of the original correspondence. Born Franz Hüffer in Münster in 1845, he studied modern languages and philology and earned a doctorate at Göttingen with research on a medieval troubadour. He moved to London in 1869 and developed a career writing about European music for British readers. From 1878 he served as music critic of The Times, while also producing books on Wagner, music history, and biography. He edited the Great Musicians series and wrote libretti for English operas. His work on the Wagner-Liszt letters joined his linguistic training with his advocacy of contemporary music, making the translated volumes an important part of his broader role as a mediator between German musical culture and English audiences.
