All That's Left Unsaid begins with a Vietnamese-Australian teenager killed in a restaurant in Cabramatta in 1996, in front of a room of people who all tell the police they saw nothing. His sister comes home to work out why. Cabramatta in those years was the centre of Australia's drug trade, and the suburb where a state member of parliament had been shot dead outside his own home in 1994, the country's first political assassination. Lien was raised in that part of south-western Sydney, took a writing degree in Kansas and reported for the Los Angeles Times before writing it.
