Margaret Rogerson
Isobel, seventeen and already in demand, paints portraits for the fair folk and is paid in enchantments, which is the setup of An Enchantment of Ravens, Margaret Rogerson's first novel, published in 2017. Sorcery of Thorns followed in 2019 and moved into a Great Library where the grimoires are alive and can turn on their keepers; its 2023 companion novella, Mysteries of Thorn Manor, brings back Elisabeth Scrivener, the sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn and the demon Silas for a smaller domestic puzzle in the run-up to a Midwinter ball. Vespertine, from 2021, is the bleakest of the four. Artemisia trains among the nuns who cleanse the dead so they cannot rise, and when possessed soldiers attack her convent she wakes an ancient spirit bound to a saint's relic and then has to bargain with the thing that wants her body. Rogerson took a degree in cultural anthropology at Miami University and worked in marketing and graphic design first. She lives near Cincinnati, Ohio, and her work has appeared in more than a dozen languages.
