Alexis Henderson
1995
Savannah, Georgia supplied Alexis Henderson her material. Homeschooled there from first grade to her final year of school, she grew up on the city's ghost stories, and has said the book would not exist had she not lived in Savannah and later Charleston. That book, The Year of the Witching (2020), follows Immanuelle Moore, a girl of mixed parentage in the rigidly puritanical settlement of Bethel, and came out from Ace. House of Hunger followed in September 2022, set among nobles who keep servants called bloodmaids and drink from them, with Countess Lisavet modelled loosely on Elizabeth Báthory. Publishers Weekly ranked her among horror's best new voices, and both novels reached Goodreads Choice Award shortlists.
