Mary E Burt

Mary E Burt was an American educator and editor who prepared myth and poetry for children. Herakles adapts material from a Greek primary-school reader rather than presenting a new classical translation. Working with historian Zenaïde A. Ragozin, Burt arranged stories of the Theban hero alongside other Greek myths in language intended for schools. In 1900, Charles Scribner's Sons issued the volume as Herakles, the Hero of Thebes, and Other Heroes of the Myth. The expanded title signals that Herakles is the organizing figure but not the book's only subject. Burt's educational method favors connected narrative over isolated names and summaries, allowing legendary characters to appear through choices, labors, and consequences. She also edited collections such as Poems That Every Child Should Know, reflecting her larger project of making established literature approachable without severing it from cultural history. Herakles belongs to that turn-of-the-century classroom tradition, where adaptation served as an invitation to further reading rather than a substitute for ancient sources.
