Maya Deane
Maya Deane is a novelist and visual artist whose study of ancient Mediterranean cultures informs her fantasy writing. Wrath Goddess Sing, her debut, reimagines the Iliad with Achilles as a trans woman and draws on ancient texts, archaeology, and mythic traditions beyond the familiar Homeric frame. William Morrow issued the book in 2022. Deane gives Athena, Aphrodite, Helen, and other legendary figures altered motives and histories, using epic scale to investigate identity, power, and who is remembered by inherited stories. Her long engagement with the Iliad began with a childhood retelling centered on Athena and later developed through formal creative-writing study.
