Meredith May is an author, journalist, speaker, and beekeeper who turns personal history into attentive nature writing. The Honey Bus recalls the upheaval that followed her parents' separation, when five-year-old Meredith and her brother went to live with their grandparents in California. Her grandfather kept hives in a rusting military bus, and learning the bees' social world gave her a language for family, loyalty, danger, and survival. Park Row Books released the memoir in 2019. May does not use beekeeping merely as an uplifting comparison; the practical work of opening hives, recognizing behavior, and accepting stings develops beside a clear account of childhood instability. Her later book Loving Edie addresses life with an anxious dog, while the picture book My Hive revisits her grandfather and bees for younger readers. The Honey Bus remains the foundation of that body of work, combining coming-of-age memoir with close observation of a colony and the mature understanding May brings to a child's memories.
