Miriam Michelson (1870-1942) was an American journalist and novelist, born in the California mining camp of Murphy's Camp and raised in Virginia City, Nevada. She built her career in San Francisco newsrooms, reporting for the Call and the Bulletin before moving to Philadelphia and the North American, and she was one of the era's pioneering women reporters, covering crime and politics at a time when women on staff were steered toward the society pages. She drew on that world in A Yellow Journalist (1905), and her debut novel, In the Bishop's Carriage (1904), was a bestseller that reached the screen twice, first with Mary Pickford in the lead. Her oldest brother was the physicist Albert A. Michelson, the first American to win a Nobel Prize in the sciences.
