N. D'Anvers was the early pen name of British art writer and translator Nancy Regina Emily Meugens Bell. Born in 1844, she adopted the name before her 1882 marriage to painter Arthur George Bell and later published as Mrs. Arthur Bell. Architecture belongs to her broad program of accessible art history, explaining major forms and periods for general readers. James McNeill Whistler, published after the artist’s death, grew from a difficult commission that Whistler himself declined to support. Bell nevertheless produced the biography in 1904. Her extensive bibliography also covered painters including Gainsborough, Tintoretto, Veronese, and Mantegna, along with Christian art, travel, and translations from French. Her husband illustrated some of her books. Architecture and James McNeill Whistler therefore show two sides of the same career: systematic instruction in visual culture and a focused life of a controversial modern artist, both written under the recognizable D'Anvers identity.
