About this book

The Skirts of the Great City is arranged in chapters on the suburbs of London, among them Hampstead and its associations and Greenwich and other south-eastern suburbs. The contents also name Waltham Abbey and Epping Forest, Hainault Forest and Woolwich, and Croydon, Carshalton and Epsom.

The text says a new era now began for Hampstead, for it became the fashion for London doctors to recommend the drinking of the waters on the spot. The text says faith in the efficacy of the waters died out, and all that now recalls their fame is a commemorative drinking-fountain in Well Walk. The text says that on the death of Queen Elizabeth James I. gave Nonsuch Palace to his consort, Queen Anne. The text calls a grand old demesne a notable witness to the continuity of the present with the past.
